Is there a future for Fast Food?
Obesity, diet-related chronic diseases and undernutrition affect about one in three people around the globe. Tackling malnutrition is a global public health priority. Consumers, too, are expressing a desire for affordable, healthier food.
Investors need to pick those companies in agriculture, food and beverage, nutrition and health as well as supermarket and restaurant chains, which are successful because they are playing a positive role in improving global nutrition.
Investors need to consult independent assessments of how well companies’ practices align with competitors in the food and beverage industry.
Health and nutrition is central to assess the future-fitness of the food industry from both a financial and non-financial perspective.
Obesity is a significant and growing public health issue that has been characterized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global pandemic. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults were considered overweight, and of these over 600 million were obese.
The cost of the global obesity epidemic is now approximately $2 trillion annually, or nearly 3% of global GDP. This is similar to the global cost of smoking or of armed violence, war and terrorism.
It is estimated that 805 million people around the world suffer from hunger every day and more than two billion people suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. Children in the developing world tend to be among the worst affected.
As with obesity the economic costs of undernutrition are high. It is estimated that many countries lose 2-3% of their gross domestic product (GDP) due to undernutrition. However, in the hardest hit countries in Africa and Asia the cost of undernutrition can be as high as 11% of GDP.
